🎏 “Koinobori” carp streamers decorate locations throughout Japan for Children’s Day, a holiday for celebrating children’s health, happiness and success. These colorful streamers depicting carp, a symbol of courage and strength due to their ability to swim upstream, are displayed to mark the occasion. Children’s Day falls on May 5th, which is also the end of a holiday period known as “Golden Week.” If you’re looking to escape the Tokyo crowds during Golden Week–when most of the nation is out enjoying their time off–head on over to Chiba to see the Koinobori at these locations:

📍 Chiba Park, Chiba City
Access: A 10-minute walk from Chiba Station, or just next to Chibakoen Station on the Chiba Urban Monorail.

📍 Showa-no-Mori, Chiba City
Access: About a 25-minute walk from Toke Station on the JR Sotobo Line. You can also take a bus from the number-3 bus station at Toke Station’s south exit, then get off at the “Showa-no-Mori Nishi” stop and walk about 8-minutes.

📍 Kozunomori Park, Narita City
Access: A 5-minute walk from Kozunomori Station on the Keisei Line, two stops from Narita Airport.
Come for the KOZU MIRAI FES 2024, which will be held here on May 5th.

Fire Drill at Kasamori Kannon: One of Japan’s most unique temples!

This week, we went to Kasamori Kannon to see their annual fire drill. This historic wooden building is the only temple structure in Japan that’s built over a cliff on all four sides, making it a one-of-a-kind destination. It’s located within a preserved old-growth forest in the hills of central Chiba, just outside Tokyo.

Directions by train & bus from Tokyo: Take the JR Sotobo Line to Mobara Station, and go to the bus station outside the south exit. Take the Kominato bus from the number-4 bus stop. The bus follows different routes depending on the time of day, with some routes stopping at the “Kasamori” bus stop right in front of the Kasamori Kannon entrance, while others stop at the “Kiriwari” bus stop, about a 15-minute walk from the Kasamori Kannon entrance (Note: the “Kiriwari” bus stop may show as “Fukazawakiriwari” on Google Maps).

For an alternate train route: Take the JR Uchibo Line to Goi Station, transfer to the Kominato Railway, then get off at Kazusa-Ushiku Station. The same Kominato bus line as described above can also be accessed at Kazusa-Ushiku Station.

I’d recommend researching the routes on Google Maps before planning your trip, as the bus lines can be a little confusing and usually only run about once or twice an hour. Luckily, I’ve found that Google Maps has recently become a lot more reliable for countryside buses in Chiba.

The temple hall is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (4:30 from April to September)
